1. Given your experience, skills, and background, how do you envision AI and ML technologies transforming the field of ATM safety and human factors in the next 5-15 years?
2. Can you elaborate on what are the potential benefits associated with incorporating AI and ML into ATM systems, particularly in terms of safety, efficiency, system performance and human performance?
3. Can you elaborate on what are the potential risks associated with incorporating AI and ML into ATM systems, particularly in terms of safety, efficiency, system performance and human performance?
4. In your opinion how can AI and ML be effectively integrated into existing ATM infrastructure and procedures without compromising safety or overburdening air traffic controllers?
5. What do you think are the key challenges and barriers that need to be addressed when implementing AI and ML in ATM systems, and how can they be overcome?
6. How can AI and ML technologies enhance the ability of ATM systems to handle complex, dynamic, uncertain and abnormal situations?
7. What measures should be taken, and what regulations should be drafted, to ensure transparency, accountability, and trust in AI and ML algorithms used in ATM systems, in safety-critical decision-making?
8. How can human factors and especially cognitive systems engineering consideration principles be effectively integrated into the design, development, and deployment of AI and ML project solutions for ATM, with a particular focus on supporting controller decision-making and workload management and without destabilizsng patterns of resilient performance?
9. How will the work .i.e. purposeful activity undertaken by the human practitioner, change with designs for solutions in ATM systems with the implementation of integration of AI and ML into ATC operations?
10. What training and skill development strategies should be employed to enable air traffic controllers to effectively collaborate with AI and ML systems and understand their limitations (e.g., bias and variance tradeoff, overfitting)?
11. What are the ethical implications of using AI and ML in ATM, and how can potential biases, discrimination, or unintended consequences especially in the field of Just Culture be mitigated?
12. In what ways do you think can collaboration between ATM industry suppliers, regulatory bodies, academia, and IFATCA foster the responsible and beneficial integration of AI and ML into the ATM domain?
13. In the current model of the ATM system Human operators are involved in securing that they have as much control of what happens as possible. Will AI and ML algorithms change the possibilities of human operators to understand system behavior and achieve the same or even higher level of control?
14. Given the recent advancements of AI/ML (e.g., AlphaZero of DeepMind that plays chess, GO and other games far better than the best human players, trained itself in just a few hours and developed very different long-term strategies than what human players established for centuries) do you think that human Air Traffic Controllers can be fully replaced by such programs? In other words, do you think that an Air Traffic Controller’s reasoning and skills can be effectively algorithmicized in their entirety?
